Economy’s Toll on Food Banks
According to Feeding America—the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity—the demand for food relief has risen 40% in the past four years. The sluggish economy has taken a toll on people around the country, and many Americans, whether or not they have a job, are struggling to put food on their tables. In May 2011, 45.8 million people received food stamps (1 out of every 7 Americans). However, for many people food stamps alone do not meet their need, or they do not qualify for federal help at all. This is why food banks are so important.
Manna, a food bank located in Washington, is one of the many centers throughout the United States that distributes food to thousands of individuals and families that are unable to obtain an adequate amount of food on their own. Manna and other food banks across the United States are lending a helping hand to the growing number of Americans who need their assistance. Feeding America locations nationwide accept donations throughout the year and are always in need of nonperishable donations.
