Hunger Isn't Seasonal...
Help us eradicate hunger in the U.S. by becoming a member of Conscious Alliance today!
Meet Pine Ridge, South Dakota...
Imagine living in a community of 30,000 people on a piece of land the size of Connecticut.
But what makes this different is there is only one full-service grocery store for the entire area. For the residents of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, this is their reality.
As Neil Grimmer, co-founder and former CEO of Plum Organics says:
In America, food insecurity is not a calorie crisis—it's a nutrition crisis. Getting access to healthy options is almost impossible for families in some of our communities. I saw that first hand when I visited Pine Ridge.In the U.S. hunger can feel distant. As if it were a crisis experienced by people continents away. But 1 in 8 Americans are going hungry. In isolated places like Pine Ridge, where over 90% of Oglala Lakota live below or at the poverty line, hunger and poverty are systemic. Conscious Alliance uses a three-tiered approach to help communities in crisis, like Pine Ridge:
- Emergency food relief to communities across the United States;
- Nutrition, exercise, and gardening education for youth in economically isolated Native American Reservations; and
- Youth empowerment programs
